Chisom N. – 2015 Summer STEM Ambassador

What are you studying at UMBC?

I am studying Biology (B.S.) with a Spanish minor.

What is your favorite place on UMBC?

I have many favorite places at UMBC and it changes from time to time. As of right now my favorite place outdoors is the courtyard in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building (There are no bees over here!). My favorite place indoors is the Chemistry Tutorial Center.

What is the most interesting thing you have ever done?

I went to Dominican Republic for one month in January 2014 to teach children and mothers in various cities throughout the country how to sew. This was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.

What extracurricular activities/ organizations are you most active in?

I am most active in the UMBC Gospel Choir, I was president this academic year. Going to choir practice is one of the best parts about my week. I am also an active member of Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity where I am the Historian on the PR/Marketing Committee. I am a Meyerhoff Peer Advisor to two amazing advisees whom I have been able to see grow in their time at UMBC so far.

What do you like to do in your free time?

What free time? When I get a chance I love to design/make clothes in my free time.

What do you want to do after your undergraduate career?

I will be taking a year off to gain valuable experience in the field of public health and afterwards I will continue on to medical school to attain an MD/MPH.

What is one thing on your bucket list?

To live in a Spanish-speaking country for over 6 months.

What is your favorite quote and why?

My favorite quote is “Begin with the end in mind”. This quote resonates with me because amongst all the things I have to do on a daily basis I have to pause an reflect on the end goal and where I want to be. This continuously keeps me on my grind.
