2015 Summer STEM Ambassador: Jin Kim

What are you studying at UMBC?

I am studying Biology as a major with a pre-medical focus as well as Chemistry for a minor.

What is your favorite place on UMBC?

During the spring and fall the library terrace under the trees are nice and the seventh floor of the AOK library is a great place for peace and quiet.

What is the most interesting thing you have ever done?

I have gone to Puerto Rico to research for the Omland Lab. I caught Puerto Rican orioles and other tropical birds on the mountain and beaches of the island!

What extracurricular activities/ organizations are you most active in?

I am very active in the Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity and am currently the vice president. It’s a great organization that brings together those pursuing medicine while giving the family feel of a Greek organization. I am also a sister of Alpha Kappa Delta Phi sorority and a Meyerhoff Scholar.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I LOVE to hike; spending the day outdoors is my ideal method of stress release. I also enjoy working with my hands: painting, sketching, crafting, you name it- and also reading!

What do you want to do after your undergraduate career?

I plan to apply to medical school and pursue a career in medicine. I am really interested in surgery- but I will discover my true passion in medical school.

What is one thing on your bucket list?

I want to hike all the major national parks and major mountain ranges of US.

What is your favorite animal and why?

Cheetah. I’ve loved the animal ever since I was a child. Did you know they are not considered a “Great Cat” because they cannot roar? Also, they run so fast that they use their tails to steer and prevent themselves from falling over as they turn.
