Featured Faculty: Erin L. Berry

“I would describe my teaching style as organic, transparent, thoughtful, and engaging. I absolutely love teaching and I love learning. I look at the classroom as a space to cultivate knowledge and make social change.”

– Erin L. Berry, PhD candidate for the Language, Literacy, and Culture Program at UMBC.

Professor Erin Berry first brought her natural teaching methods to UMBC in 2014 as an adjunct lecturer for the Media and Communications department after earning her master’s degree in Organizational Communication at Bowie State, and teaching at Morgan State University. This summer, Erin will share her knowledge with students in MCS 222 – Introduction to Media & Communication Studies:

“In this class, students are encouraged to pick up their cellphones and electronic devices to assist with our ever-changing conversations that are often impacted by what occurs in the digital landscape.”

Over the course of six weeks, students will be introduced central research methods and critical perspectives of media and communication by exploring themes such as programming and interpersonal communication within various forms of media in historical and cultural concepts.

The skills developed in this course can be used outside of the classroom as well. Erin recalls one of her favorite teaching moments, when she and her students went on a walking tour of UMBC:

“…to take note of what the landmarks, architecture, and various flyers communicate as it concerns identity. Students became excited when they began to make immediate application from the classroom to spaces outside of the classroom.”

Students taking MCS 222 will also earn Art & Humanities GEP.
