Summer 2015 – Studies in Popular Culture

What do summer blockbuster movies, guilty pleasure TV shows, online video games, and social media share in common? They’re all part of American popular culture. While often dismissed as “only entertainment,” American popular culture is a huge economic force that shapes and reflects how we think about virtually everything. Using examples from film, history, sociology and anthropology, you’ll learn how popular culture influences what we watch, listen to, and read. You’ll also explore how digital technology is transforming the roles of contemporary media audiences and challenging conventional wisdom regarding millennial pop culture fans.

AMST 325 is offered at UMBC’s Shady Grove campus in Rockville and fulfills the Arts & Humanities general education (GEP) requirement. All students are invited to take classes at the Shady Grove campus during summer session.
