The Lion Brothers Building & Discover Baltimore!

Lion Brothers Building

Get off campus (and earn credits!) this summer as you immerse yourself in Baltimore’s unique history, art, politics, and culture.

Lion Brothers Building

The historic Lion Brothers Building is the home for UMBC’s new downtown classroom near the University of Maryand’s campus. Built in 1886, the 131 year-old factory building is one of Hollins Market’s oldest residents. After the Lion Brothers Company relocated to Owings Mills in 1954, the factory was briefly occupied by another clothing manufacturer and Globe Screen Printing until it became vacant in 2002.

Fifteen years (and one renovation) later the 38,000 square foot factory is ready to be occupied again. Part of the factory’s new space will serve as UMBC’s city classroom for Discover Baltimore this summer:

One of three Special Programs at UMBC, Discover Baltimore transforms the city into a living classroom in which students can learn and engage. Discover Baltimore features specific courses designed to deepen students’ knowledge about our “neighbor to the north,” while fulfilling a GEP (or two).

The Neighborhood & Special Events

Make sure to take some time outside of class to explore the vibrant neighborhood of Hollins Market! Just a short walk from the Lion Brothers Building lies a mix of neighborhood attractions, both old and new. Students looking to satisfy their hunger can visit the neighborhood’s namesake market and grab aslice of pizza at Zella’s. Experience a new form of after class entertainment by catching a puppet show at the Black Cherry Puppet Theater. Or take a leisurely pre-class stroll to admire the neighborhood artwork. Hollins Market has plenty of things for students to do and see!

There are also several events for Students enrolled in the Discover Baltimore program to attend throughout the summer. These special events exhibit all of the fun, culture, and learning that Baltimore has to offer!

We will meet on the campus shuttle at 5:00pm, or at Pratt & Penn at 5:30 and will be at the gates and ready for the first pitch against the Chicago Cubs at 7:05pm.
